Nuclear Medicine
This area encompasses a wide variety of examinations all of which require the administration of a low dose radioactive material either orally or intravenously. The preparation for these exams vary depending on the particular study.
After registering for your examination, a certified technologist
will greet you and escort you to the Nuclear Medicine Department within the
Radiology Department. A brief history will be obtained to insure the best quality
study. You will then receive either an intravenous injection or oral capsule of
radioactive material. The technologist will then give you specific instructions to
follow. For some examinations you will be imaged immediately and others require a
delay before imaging. Imaging involves lying on a table while a camera is positioned
over the body part to be imaged. The camera is often moved into several different
positions during the course of the exam. Following completion of imaging the technologist
will escort you back to the waiting room or give you directions to your next appointment.
