Mammography Stereotatic Biopsy/ABBI
When abnormalities are identified on screening mammography many
additional exams can be performed in an attempt to determine whether a lesion is
benign or cancerous. Unfortunately there are some lesions, which can not be clearly
defined, as benign and a biopsy is needed. Many biopsy options are available of
which stereotactic biopsy is one of the most common. These biopsies are performed at
DMH on a daily basis.
After registering in the outpatient area a certified technologist
will greet you and take to the dressing room to change into a gown. The technologist
will then escort you to the stereotactic suite and explain the procedure including its
risks. The Radiologist will also speak with you and then consent will be obtained.
You will lie on a table with your breast placed through a hole in the table secured in a
biopsy device. Scout films are taken and then the abnormality localized. The skin of the
breast is cleansed and then local anaesthetic given to numb the area. With computer
precision guidance several biopsies of the lesion are then taken and sent to the lab for
appropriate evaluation. The breast is released from compression and pressure held for a
few moments to help prevent bleeding. You will be given instructions and then escorted
back to the waiting room.
The Radiologist or technologist will contact you the following day
to make sure you are all right. Biopsy results are available usually within 24 - 48 hours.
The Radiologist or your private physician will notify you of results.
