DMH Sports Medicine Specialist Serves as Medical Ambassador in Tunisia
DMH Sports Medicine Specialist Wendell Becton, M.D., has recently returned from a classified United States Air Force mission in Tunisia, Africa.
United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Becton served as a medical ambassador sharing his medical knowledge and skills with counterparts at a 630-bed Tunisian military hospital which is part of the Tunisian Military Health Care System.
Dr. Becton’s trip was part of MEDLITE 2006, the only exercise conducted in Tunisia this year by the US Joint Chiefs of Staff and the US Air Force.
"It was an honor to be chosen to represent my country," Dr. Becton said. In a congratulatory e-mail from the Pentagon, Dr. Becton was told that "this exercise is critical to US-Tunisian relations and represents a vital strategic interest to the United States. This exercise provides the United States with the opportunity to forge a long-term working relationship with the Tunisian Military Health Care System."
United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld visited Tunisia just weeks before the MEDLITE 2006 participants arrived.
MEDLITE 2006 participants were selected from hundreds of applications from physicians, registered nurses, dentists and other medical professionals. Dr. Becton has been a member of the United States Air Force Reserves as a flight surgeon since 1995.
